Thirteenth edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 12 February 2025, the Federation of European Publishers organised the 13th edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues with the support of SOFIA and with the following speakers:

Gauthier van Meerbeeck, Editorial Director of Le Lombard (Belgian publishing house specialised in comics and graphic novels),
Philippe Glorieux, Chief Marketing Officer of IMPS The Smurfs,
author François Boucq (winner of the Angoulême Grand Prix)
and Alix Garin, author of ‘Ne M'oublie pas' and ‘Impénétrable'.

The highly successful event was attended by around twenty participants, including eight Members of the European Parliament:

Inese Vaidere (Latvia, EPP), member of the INTA Committee and the Internal Market (IMCO) Committee

As well as half a dozen assistants, including Isabelle Le Callennec's assistant (FR/EPP).

Laurence Farreng introduced the evening, recalling the obligation of transparency, respect for the opt-out and remuneration by AI companies, as well as the importance of freedom of expression (with occasional differences on secularism with the Nordics, who may emphasise the notion of blasphemy).

The two comic authors spoke of the long time it takes to produce their work (one to two years for an album). Gauthier van Meerbeeck mentioned the support, particularly financial, during this time and pointed out that 9 out of 10 albums are commercial failures.

The participants widely spoke about AI, notably:

– A. Garin called for a reflection on the bias of AIs and the society they may shape and noted that AI amounts to annihilating the fact of sharing an experience through art.

– F. Boucq explained that with AI, we give up discovering the world for ourselves, ‘the machine puts a distance between the author and the reader', he said, adding that ‘there is no symbolic world'.

Finally, Philippe Glorieux cited the emotional relationship that everyone has with the Smurfs around the world (the Smurfs have been translated into 55 languages).

MEP Emma Rafowicz expressed her disappointment at the final declaration of the AI Summit, held in Paris on 10-11 February. MEP Benoît Cassart was very sensitive to the issues of copyright and freedom of expression.

On 22 November, the Federation of European Publishers organised its 12th edition of the Authors-Publishers Dialogue with the Spanish writer Javier Cercas, his Spanish publisher Juan Cerezo (Editorial Director, Tusquets Editores) and his Italian publisher Luigi Brioschi (President, Guanda Editore). The event gathered around 30 participants, of which 10 MEPs, as well as 9 MEPs' assistants. The event was hosted by MEPs Iban Garcia del Blanco (S&D, ES) and François-Xavier Bellamy (EPP, FR):

Iban Garcia del Blanco introduced the Dialogue by stressing the importance of protecting copyright. Javier Cercas quoted a philosopher who said that the success of a book is the result of the meeting between the private obsession of a writer and the public need of a society and highlighted the universal nature of literature. He stressed the importance of having a publisher, even abroad, in order to benefit from a strategy and contacts with booksellers: "The bookseller is the person who gives the reader the book he needs". In Catalonia, for example, it is thanks to booksellers that books become bestsellers. Luigi Brioschi observed that the challenge is to give the novel the form it deserves and that the author and publisher form a kind of couple. Juan Cerezo noted that "the merit is to have a nose".

In conclusion, F.-X. Bellamy acknowledged the power of books while calling for greater transparency between authors and publishers. He pointed to the need for ethical rules on artificial intelligence, in the name of democracy. Quoting Hegel, he recalled the role of publishers in selecting what is worth publishing and noted that today all words are put on the same level and that there is competition for attention.

Eleventh edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 10 May 2023, the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) organised the 11th Authors-Publishers Dialogues with two tandems: a French tandem, with Carole Martinez and her publisher Jean-Marie Laclavetine (Gallimard), and a Polish tandem, with the author and nature activist Adam Wajrak and Pawel Gozlinski (Agora). The event was organised with the help of SOFIA at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The background to the event was the preparation of a report on books by the Parliament.

Some fifteen MEPs' assistants and political group advisers were also present.

The authors and their publishers discussed the importance of their collaboration and their bond of trust in the work of literary creation.

In his introduction, Tomasz Frankowski announced the publication of his draft report on 11 May. As part of the French dialogue, Jean-Marie Laclavetine explained that the publisher's role is "to bring out the best in the author". Carole Martinez confirmed that "Jean-Marie Laclavetine [gives her] the strength and confidence to see a book through to the end" and that the publisher must not damage but believe in the author's work. Jean-Marie Laclavetine emphasised that this is a long-term, patient process, describing the process of waiting for manuscripts, identifying and supporting authors: "a fruitful relationship that Amazon will never be able to offer".

During the Polish dialogue, Adam Wajrak, a naturalist journalist who does not hesitate to chain himself to trees in the Polish forest to prevent them from being cut down, confided that he hated writing. That's why he needs people to make him do it, and "a book is a team effort". He believes that writing "will enable us to survive the climate crisis because societies that read a lot do better". He believes that reading should not just be for entertainment purposes, and that "authors should all take a strong stand". Pawel Gozlinski warned of the difficulties Polish authors face in making a living from their works, and the risks of the subscription model for remunerating authors should it become dominant, as in the music sector.

The speakers then exchanged views with the guests, who were very interested and enthusiastic.

Tenth edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 5 April 2022, the FEP hosted the 10th edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues at the restaurant Chez Yvonne in Strasbourg. The dialogue featured the writer Olivier Guez and the publisher Olivier Nora, Président Directeur Général at Editions Grasset.

The publisher and his author presented the anthology "Le Grand Tour", consisting of 27 stories by 27 authors, one per Member Country. Twenty guests attended the event, which was a big success and allowed a dialogue between the author, the publisher and the deputies.

Eight MEPs attended the dialogue, three of whom sponsored the event: Laurence Farreng (France, LREM/ RENEW), a member of the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT), Emmanuel Maurel (France, Republican and Socialist Left/Left Group), member of the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI), and Tomasz Frankowski (Poland, European People's Party), member of the CULT. Unfortunately, yet, he could not be present as he was at the European Parliament.

The tenth edition of the dialogue was also attended by Fabienne Keller (LREM/ RENEW), former mayor of Strasbourg and member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Pascal Arimont (Belgium, European People's Party), member of the JURI and substitute in the Industry, Research and Energy Committee, Alexis Georgoulis (Greece, GUE), member of the CULT, Hannes Heide (Austria, Socialist and Democrat), member of the CULT, Niklas Nienass (Germany, Greens), member of the CULT, as well as Cécile Deniard, President of SOFIA, who financed the event. Moreover, a dozen deputies' assistants and advisers to political groups attended the Dialogue.

In her opening speech, Ms Laurence Farreng recalled the lack of visibility of Europe. On the other hand, Emmanuel Maurel highlighted the political battle he was carrying out with his colleagues, particularly in terms of the framework of the DSA and the DMA, to defend the single book price and copyright against the GAFA, which is relevant to protecting the "philosophy of Europe".

Olivier Guez shared his personal journey ("I was born European") and as the author of the book produced in collaboration with the French presidency of the European Union (choice of 27 authors). Olivier Nora highlighted the atypical nature of this collective work, in which he played a back-office role in Olivier Guez's work. The latter explained that "this book was elaborated for it relies on a relationship of trust with Olivier Nora, who acknowledges the convictions". Furthermore, Olivier Nora believes that "this book shows a unique work in Europe". With the context of the war in Ukraine, the bookstore industry is remarkably low, yet it is a "long-seller". Mr Guez noted that "we read many Anglo-Saxon books, whereas we read little among Europeans". Mr Nora added, however, that "the rights purchases are currently refocusing on Europe".

MEPs, in the end, expressed their great interest in the book and wished that it would be translated into the various European languages. This topic made it possible to explain the high costs of transferring rights and translations to them.

Ninth edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On November 12 the FEP hosted the 9th edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event, featuring David Lagercrantz and his publishers, was a big success with over 50 guests in attendance – notably Commissioner for Digital Economy Mariya Gabriel and several MEPs including Christian Ehler (EPP), founder and president of the intergroup for Cultural and Creative Industry in Europe and event host; French MEPs François-Xavier Bellamy (EPP) and Christophe Grudler (RE) as well as Axel Voss (EPP), rapporteur of the Copyright Directive.

Mariya Gabriel emphasised in her opening speech that “if we are here, it's thanks to you.” David Lagercrantz exchanged with his Swedish publisher, Eva Gedin (Norstedts). They explained that “to tell a good story there has to be many eyes reading the same text.” Gedin highlighted that it was the publisher who had the idea to get in touch with Lagercrantz after co-writing Zlatan Ibrahimovic's autobiography. Lagercrantz was surprised to see that publishing “was not just correcting the text but also checking the facts and implementing marketing and distribution strategies.”

Lagercrantz' publishers from France (Françoise Nyssen, Actes Sud), Italy (Francesca Varrotto, Marsilio), Germany (Tilo Eckhardt, Heyne/Random House) and the United Kingdom (Christopher MacLehose, MacLehose) then offered their comments. Nyssen reiterated the importance of copyright while Eckhardt highlighted the importance of promoting books, which he defined as “slow media,” and the current challenge of “binge-reading” in the Netflix era (“binge-watching”). MacLehose underlined the difficulties in publishing translated books in the United Kingdom.

In his concluding remarks Ehler reflected on the adoption of the Copyright Directive, noting that the book industry had succeeded in convincing the European Parliament of the importance of the sector. He also encouraged publishers to be reactive in considering their methods of reducing transaction costs for the use of protected content or the printing of books.

Eigth edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

The 8th edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues was organised by FEP on 11th September 2018 at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, under the sponsorship of MEP Pervenche Berès, co-chair of the Culture and creation Industries Intergroup.

The event was also attended by other Members of the European Parliament:
the Germans Christian Ehler (CDU), co-chair of the Culture and creation Industries Intergroup, Petra Kammerevert (S&D), chair of the Committee on culture and education, and Helga Trupel (Greens), the Greek Georgios Grammatikakis (Greece, S&D), and the Italians socialists Luigi Morgano, Silvia Costa, Mercedes Bresso, Elena Gentile and Patrizia Toia.

Petra Kammerevert and Pervenche Berès emphasised on the stumbling blocks that are newspaper publishers' right and the responsibility of platforms in the copyright directive. According to Silvia Costa, these questions are stakes for “democracy, freedom of expression and the European model”.

During the first dialogue, the German author Georg Klein shared his experience, saying that “if people ask him if he's writing a book, he replies that he's writing a text and that he wouldn't be able to create a book”: “my creativity is not enough, I need a catalyst, that is set up beforehand, through interviews. His editor, Peter Kraus Vom Cleff (Rowolt) explained that” everything is done within the framework of a dialogue” or even through “a symbiosis”. Georg Klein mentioned the "pleasure of creating a beautiful book" and the "work of the publishing house to convey this madness and to promote the book to the public." Peter Kraus vom Cleff reminded how important it is "that people can continue to live off their creation for European culture and identity".

During the second dialogue, Pierre Dutilleul introduced Sammy Ketz, the director of the AFP office in Baghdad and author of the platform that defends the rights of press publishers, by reprising a quote of his: “copyright, a matter of life and death”. Christine Buhagiar, European Director of AFP, highlighted the investments of the press to develop online, but also “the loss of revenues of this branch due to the decrease of subscriptions and of advertising revenues”, 80% of the latter being captured by Google and Facebook. Similarly, Sammy Ketz observed that there are fewer journalists on the field. Pierre Dutilleul emphasised the verification work of journalists' information such as Sammy Ketz. The latter acknowledged seeing "fake news" on a daily basis, and presented his activity as being more like the one of "Sherlock Holmes than Albert London". Christine Buhagiar explained that journalists are now being trained on "fake news", which is expensive. Similarly, according to Sammy Ketz, "AFP would not exist without a Baghdad's office. It's important to tell what's going on". For example, the United States have seen a reduction in the number of their journalists from 71,000 to 34,000. Christine Buhagiar called for sharing this value "so that the media do not live off public subsidies", and so in the name of democracy.

In conclusion, Helga Truepel called to change our messages and to form a link between freedom of expression, put forward by our opponents, and the notion of responsibility.

Seventh Edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 29th November 2017, FEP held the 7th edition of the Author-Publisher's Dialogues with the French authors Fatou Diome and her publisher Gilles Haéri (Flammarion), and another tandem composed of Jean-Paul Didierlaurent and his publisher Marion Mazauric (Au Diable Vauvert) at the European Parliament in Brussels. This highly successful event was attended by over sixty guests, including MEPs and assistants, as well as members of FEP and representatives from SOFIA (who sponsored the event) and the European and International Booksellers Federation, among them was French MEP Pervenche Berès (S&D), host of the event.

Pervenche Berès introduced the evening, emphasising that “the author-publisher relationship is at the heart of creation” and that it is “a relationship that must be monetised.”. During the dialogues, moderated by Pierre Dutilleul, Director General of Syndicat national de l'édition and past FEP President, Jean-Paul Didierlaurent explained that there was a spark between himself and Mazauric from the first time they met at a short story contest. For him, the author-publisher relationship is an “intimate subject… the publisher is both a coach and a confidant.” He continued: “They [the publisher] are there to act as a mirror.” More used to writing short stories, Jean-Paul Didierlaurent confessed that he “had a complex about writing long works”, but Marion taught him how to “get right to the bone”. Mazauric herself believes that “one of the difficulties of being a writer is not being able to read what one has written, not being able to take a step back”. Speaking of the economic aspect of their industry, she said that “a writer does not necessarily live by his pen, and without his social life and experiences at work, Jean-Paul Didierlaurent would not have been able to write as he did.”

In the second dialogue, Gilles Haéri affirmed that “at the core there is the author: the publisher does not direct the author and must respect their work. Primarily, the job of the publisher is to turn down the majority of manuscripts.” He continued: “On Amazon or Google, anyone can write anything. Authors create, publishers must then mediate the text… the author-pubisher-bookseller triangle is at the heart of creation.”. Fatou Diome views her editor as “the one who gives me an anchorage… the interlocutor who trusts me, even when I write nonsense.”. Diome confesses that she is: “a child who wants to give something to the world”, and emphasises the importance of the support of her editor in allowing her to do so. Finally, Gilles Haéri put forward the notion that “gratuitousness is often put in opposition with creation, but there is an economic fight to be carried out on behalf of the authors in order to preserve copyright, a human right.”

JEAN-PAUL DIDIERLAURENT
Having twice won the prestigious Prix Hemingway, as well as numerous other literary contests for his short stories, Jean-Paul Didierlaurent has successfully turned his hand to writing novels. His first novel, Le Liseur du 6h27, is a Folio best-seller and has been translated in 30 countries. His other works include Au diable vauvert, a collection of short stories entitled Macadam and the novel Le reste de leur vie.

Born in Senegal, Fatou Diome moved to France in 1994 and has lived in Strasbourg since. She studied literature at the Marc Bloch University of Strasbourg, and went on to study at the Higher Institute of Education of Karlsruhe in Germany.
Diome is the author of nine books, including an anthology of short stories titled La Préférence nationale, and five novels: Le Ventre de l'Atlantique, which was published by Anne Carrière in 2008 and Kétala (2006), Inassouvies nos vies (2008), Celles qui attendant (2010) and Impossible de grandir (2013) which were published with éditions Flammarion.
In her most recent work, an essay called Marianne porte plainte !, Diome tackles themes of education, secularism and the concept of national identity.

Sixth Edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues with Geert Mak and Léonor de Récondo

The Author-Publisher Dialogues is an annual event, organised by the Federation of European Publishers at the European Parliament, where authors and publishers talk about the true nature of their relationship.

The sixth edition was sponsored again by MEP Mary Honeyball (UK, S&D) and took place on Wednesday 23 November 2016 in Strasbourg. The event was successful and extremely well attended by the MEPs and their collaborators.

Participants shared insights of Dutch author Geert Mak and his publisher Mizzi van der Pluijm (Atlas Contact) collaboration. Mizzi reminded that the role played by the publishers is «to lay the cards on the table and encourage discussions». Geert compared publishers to «football coaches», «social workers and psychologists», bringing together at the same time a good taste, intuition and sense of business". Questioned about the future, considered that as far as «there will be someone who wants to write», publishers will always be needed and Geert explained that the e-book is still experimental, whereas «the book is a vector of dreams; reading a book is like driving a good car».

The second tandem author-publisher was composed by the publisher Sabine Wespieser (Sabine Wespieser Editeur) and her author Léonor de Récondo.

Sabine Wespieser pointed out that her job consists in «making an emotional choice», «accepting the responsibility to find the largest possible number of readers for the authors». According to Léonor de Recondo, «a book is something magic»; «writing a book is emotional; to do it freely, you need to feel confident, and to be understood ». Furthermore, Sabine Wespieser declared that «booksellers are our first allies inside a bookshop, where we can find what we were not looking for, in contrast with what you can find on Amazon».

Both authors and publishers have brilliantly demonstrated that publishing is about interaction and that this special author-publisher's relationship is essential in the creative process. They have insisted on the importance to have a balance copyright to support their joint works and their ambition to find audiences for their books. They have reminded the importance to support bookshops that are a wonderful place to discover new books and authors.

We look forward to the seventh edition which will take place in Brussels in November 2017.

Journalist and historian Geert Mak was born in 1946. He started in Amsterdam as editor of the weekly De Groene Amsterdammer, worked for years at the foreign desk of the VPRO broadcasting company and as city-reporter of the NRC Handelsblad daily. As from 1992 he has dedicated himself increasingly to the writing of books. 'In Europe', his voyage through the continent and through the twentieth-century Europe, became a classic all over Europe, with 350.000 copies sold in the Netherlands and translations in German, Hungarian, Italian, Spanish, French, English and Polish. In 2008, he was awarded with the Leipziger Buchpreis für Europäischen Verständigung. His books are translated in more than twenty languages.

Born in 1976, Léonor de Récondo performed all over Europe as a baroque violinist. In October 2010, she published her first novel "La Grâce du cyprès blanc", published by Le Temps qu'il fait. Fifth Edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

The Author-Publisher Dialogues is an annual event, organised by the Federation of European Publishers at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where authors and publishers talk about the true nature of their relationship.

Chaired by the President of the FEP, Pierre Dutilleul, the last edition was sponsored by MEP Mary Honeyball (UK, S&D).

The event, which took place on 25th November 2015, was a great success and an occasion to meet with Swedish author, Håkan Nesser, and his publisher Eva Bonnier, who shared insights of their collaboration.

The second dialogue featured the author and lawyer Richard Malka who has recently written a piece on the threats to copyright, dialoguing with FEP President, Pierre Dutilleul. Malka is a lawyer committed to the freedom of expression, having been the lawyer of Charlie Hebdo since 1992.

They all shared with the attendees their stories and arguments. They have brilliantly demonstrated that publishing is about interaction and that this special author-publisher's relationship is essential in the creative process.
