Presentation "European Book Market Statistics 2024-25" at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025

The Federation of European Publishers (FEP) presented the European Book Market Statistics 2024–25 on 15 October during the Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse), one of the most important global gatherings for the publishing industry.

First launched at the Fair in 2022, the annual FEP book market presentation has quickly become one of the highlights at the Fair for publishing professionals, drawing growing international attention from the book sector and beyond.

The European book market statistics have been presented by FEP Deputy Director Enrico Turrin, with introductory remarks by FEP Vice-President Phaedon Kidoniatis. Over 200 people have attended the event.

Key Highlights from the 2024-25 European Book Market Statistics

Turnover: The European book market reached its highest-ever nominal turnover in 2024 at €24.9 billion, surpassing the previous 2007 peak. However, inflation-adjusted figures tell a different story, with real turnover down to €15.5 billion, compared to €22.2 billion in 2007.
Price and inflation gap: Book prices have risen only 38.3% over the past 20 years, far below general inflation (64.1%), putting sustained pressure on publisher margins.
Turnover by format: Print books still dominate (82.9% of total turnover), but audiobooks are the fastest-growing segment, reaching 4.2% of sales in 2024.
Turnover by distribution channel: Physical bookstores account for 48.2% of turnover; online book sales decreased to 23.5%.
Turnover by destination: Book exports increased to 20.3%, though still below pre-2015 levels.

The FEP report on the European book market also highlighted a worrying trend in reading engagement:

47.2% of Europeans aged 16 and over are non-readers (source: Eurostat).
The main reason is lack of interest, not affordability.

European Book Market Statistics 2024-25

During its General Assembly in Tallinn, on 12-13 June 2025, FEP presented its updated figures on the European Book Market, including an overview of the book market in 2024 and a first glimpse of 2025 (Jan-Mar).

FEP will present updated data during its traditional event at the Frankfurt Book Fair, on Wednesday, 15 October at the Frankfurt Studio from 10:30 to 11:00.

European Book Market Statistics 2023-24

In what is becoming a traditional appointment on the first day of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Federation of European Publishers presented the results of its annual survey and research on the European book market statistics on Wednesday 16 October 2024 at the Frankfurt Studio.

FEP President Ricardo Franco Levi and FEP Deputy Director and Economist Enrico Turrin held the presentation. It provided detailed data on the book market for the year 2023 and an advance of the market dynamics for 2024, as well as the main trends for the last 20 years.

European Book Market data 2023/2024 - Readmagine presentation

On 29 and 30 May, FEP attended Readmagine 2024, the Week of Digital Innovation in Reading, Books and Libraries, organized by the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation (FGSR). On Thursday 30 May, FEP Deputy Director Enrico Turrin held a presentation titled "Figures on the European Publishers Ecosystem" containing the results of FEP survey about updates in the European book market for 2023/2024.

Updated European Book Market Statistics 2022-2023 presented at the Guadalajara Book Fair

From 27 to 29 November, FEP participated at the Guadalajara Book Fair, in Mexico. The fair, the second largest in the world (after Frankfurt), had this year the European Union as the guest of honour.

On 29 November, FEP presented its statistics, with an update of the data presented in October at the Frankfurt Book Fair, offering a good overview of the European Book Market for a mixed audience of European professionals and Mexican stakeholders. The presentation is available below in PDF format.

European Book Market Statistics 2022-2023

In what is becoming a regular appointment at the Frankfurt Book Fair, on Wednesday 18 October the Federation of European Publishers illustrated the results of its annual statistical survey of the European book market.

After an overview and some introductory remarks by the FEP President Ricardo Franco Levi, FEP's Deputy Director and Economist Enrico Turrin presented the detailed data collected by FEP on the turnover from book sales and on the titles published by European book publishers in 2022, also looking at the evolution of formats and trade channels, and outlined how main markets have performed thus far in 2023. European Book Market Statistics 2022-2023 (preliminary)

For the first time, FEP presented its preliminary annual book market statistics at the Readmagine conference 2023 in Madrid. The presentation provided an estimate of the value of the European book market in 2022, an overview of the changes in turnover in many countries in 2022 compared to 2021 and 2019 and a glimpse of the trends in individual markets in the first months of 2023.

The data come mainly from the questionnaires that FEP collects from its members every year and are subject to estimates and approximations. It is essential to bear in mind that most national data are hardly comparable between them and that rather than the specific figures, it is the trends and the narratives they reveal that matter. In some cases, even data from an individual country come from different sources and room must be allowed for issues of accuracy and/or interpretation.

A few notes on data and methodology: consolidated data are the result of aggregation, integration and estimation of data provided by FEP members through dedicated surveys. Data on changes at national level regard in most cases turnover in the trade book sector (i.e., excluding the educational, academic and scholarly sectors).
