THE PROJECT

The war in Ukraine has provoked a huge humanitarian crisis; one of its most evident aspects is the massive influx of refugees, mainly women and children, leaving the country. These people will likely not have been able to take many things with them, and definitely not books.

Tales of EUkraine (TEUk) will address the issue with a solution that will favour the integration of Ukrainian refugees in their host countries, notably by facilitating the inclusion of children and their building relationships with peers from host countries, while supporting the Ukrainian publishing industry.

The project has built a catalogue of Ukrainian children's books, the rights of which will be made available for licensing to several publishers from various EU Member States currently hosting significant numbers of refugees. The publishers, under the coordination and supervision of the respective national publishers' associations, will acquire the rights to the books, translate them and publish bilingual editions in Ukrainian and the country's language. TEUk is expecting to print at least 300,000 books.

The publishers' associations and FEP will acquire the copies produced by the publishers at cost, and organise their distribution, relying on NGOs, voluntary associations, and other entities, to deliver the books to a series of beneficiaries such as schools, libraries and other hubs and venues where they will be made available to their ultimate beneficiaries: Ukrainian refugee children and their peers in the host countries.

Thanks to TEUk, refugee children will be able to both retain a connection with the culture of their home country and share it with their new friends in host countries, thus facilitating their inclusion and increasing the knowledge of Ukrainian culture across Europe. At the same time, the project will support Ukrainian authors, illustrators, and publishers in a time of dire need, facilitating their connection with European publishers.

RENEWING THE BOOK EXPERIENCE

Möbius started in March 2021 and will last until February 2024. It is co-funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 programme and aims to stimulate innovation in the publishing sector by leveraging the power of prosumers.

Möbius was born to invigorate European book publishing by remodeling traditional value chains and business models in the publishing sector. The main challenge that the Möbius partnership addresses is to embrace the prosumers' potential as valuable contributors and drivers of new products and services, including new enriched media experiences.

Möbius, coordinated by EURECAT, aims to contribute to a renewed and invigorated European publishing sector by providing it with methods and tools to leverage the potential of prosumers in innovation processes and thus guaranteeing user-centric and user-driven perspectives in the design and delivery of new enriched media experiences.

THE GOALS OF MÖBIUS:

1. Building a prosumer intelligence kit

By applying digital methods from computational social science, complemented by user studies, to analyse and learn from the vast open online communities of readers and writers.

The new prosumer intelligence toolkit will allow publishers to better understand how global readers are relating to books, their characters, storylines. Data analysis will be possible thanks to an interactive data visualization and a user-friendly dashboard for professional use.

2. Developing a prosumer Business model

By exploring and proposing new business models and ways for identifying and valuing prosumers contributions to the publishing value chains.

In strict compliance with existing IP and copyright legal frameworks, Möbius aims to illuminate governing logics that allow the creation of fair, sustainable, and productive relations with prosumers.

3. Creating the Möbius book

By designing and developing the software tools that will allow the production of new immersive and interactive book experiences.

The Möbius book will be a cross-media production that will integrate a digital version, a 3D audiobook (3D audio and binaural reproduction of the reading experience), and audiovisual content based on the book itself.

Despite an amazing inventiveness and a multitude of creative startups, very few innovations in the field of content development end up having a substantial impact on a sector-wide or even European level. Structural barriers to innovation represent some of the greatest obstacles standing in the way of progress, and it's our goal to tackle these barriers. With creativeSHIFT we bring like-minded people from the creative industries together and pave the way for new innovative ideas that all content sectors can benefit from.

Our unique network consists of people from all over the EU with different backgrounds in content creation - from startup founders and game developers, publishers and authors, performing artists, festival organisers, animators and film producers, investors, university professors, accelerators and many more.

Our differences will help us navigate the coordinates of tomorrow's creative innovation ecosystem, all in pursuit of a sound future for Europe's creative landscape: thriving, resilient, securing cultural diversity and promoting healthy democracies and the ecologically sustainable development of Europe.

How creativeSHIFT brings content value to the next level

We have established ten taskforces that are working on cross-sectoral solutions for the following topics:

Fragmentation and silo mentality and Internationalisation as the basis for collaboration across content sectors as well as countries. Funding and financing to explore and increase financial opportunities. Visibility for making the creative sectors and their innovation potential visible and Attractivity to attract new talents and entrepreneurs. Mutually, Accelerators and incubators to help facilitate entrepreneurship. Adaption and reinvention to find new ways to reach the audience and strengthen the market position and new models of content creation to establish innovative concepts on how content can be created. As the current developments are heavily affecting the creative industries, we further address the UN sustainability goals as well as the effects of Covid-19.

The outcome of each taskforce can range from collaborative concepts, prototypes, event ideas, business models to policy recommendations and more. The outcomes of the project have been presented at the last Linecheck Festival in Milan, in November 2021 and at our concluding event online on 22nd February 2022 (a recording of which is available here)

Funded by the European Union

CreativeSHIFT was initiated by seven partners and is funded by the European Commission. The project was submitted to the call for "Platform(s) for cultural content innovation".

"Be revolutionary, be proud, be ambitious!" Dr. Christian Ehler, member of the European Parliament, encouraged us at our Inspirathon - and the creativeSHIFT community aims to live by it. One important goal is therefore to formulate recommendations for policy stakeholders, as a way to help build the best possible European innovation ecosystem for tomorrow's creative sectors.

The purpose of SIDT Books
Book culture and business in Europe excels in bringing a rich diversity of voices and narratives to often highly specialised and segmented audiences. Between printed books and various digital editions catered to readers and listeners of all strands, books are produced and consumed in increasingly varied ways and formats.
The vendors supporting these bookish offerings are often relatively small organisations. Due to both their size and their vocation as highly specialised cultural services, finding their audiences is a challenge in view of their limited resources.
In this situation, timely and continuous innovation is both a necessary and difficult task.
Researching new techniques and practices; experimenting with new models of authoring, production and distribution of books; and directly entertaining active communities of customers is difficult to balance with the daily professional obligations of a small company.
SIDT Books (which stands for Sustaining and Innovating cultural Diversity in literary Translation) aims to build bridges between proven innovators and practitioners.
With a mix of research and a set of hands-on training modules, SIDT Books has the skill to identify and disseminate relevant best practice models and market analyses for small and medium-sized book publishing and retail companies.

What SIDT Books has to offer
Building on research on market segments, trends and dedicated actors in the book translation publishing industry across Europe, SIDT Books proposes a set of professional training modules centred around proven business practices for authors, publishers, distributors and retailers.
Our goal for each training unit is to bring together decision makers, young talent, leading international industry experts and teachers to share their knowledge and skills as well as learn how to apply novel business practices.
SIDT Books has prepared four different training modules, each of which proposes a unique and distinct set of skills and methods to optimise workflows, marketing and the handling of multiple formats and business models in the book sector.

The training modules of around 10 to 12 hours each will be offered to interested practitioners, first between April and June 2021, and then a second time in the autumn of this year. Topics will range from “digitisation of the publishing workflow”, and “radical innovation” approaches, to “user-centric marketing” and “new business models”, notably in publishing operations specialising in translated fiction.
Each module will introduce a group of around 20 to 25 trainees to market overviews and practical case studies, elements of innovative business practices and hands-on group work. Experienced industry practitioners will act as trainers, together with professional moderators.
Participation in the modules is free but subject to submitting an application with a detailed questionnaire and a motivational letter, available (with more details on the project and the modules) at www.sidt-books.eu; the project management board will retain the final decision on applications.

SIDT is a joint initiative of Beletrina Academic Press, Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Federation of European Publishers, Brussels, Belgium, the Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez, Madrid, Spain, Lietuvos Leidėjų Asociacija (Lithuanian Publishers' Association), Vilnius, Lithuania, and Rüdiger Wischenbart Content and Consulting, Vienna, Austria, as a project coordinator.
The project is co-funded under the Creative Europe programme by the European Commission.

The role of FEP in the project is to provide expertise from the book sector for the development of the training modules and to ensure wide dissemination of the project outcomes in the publishing community.

The Digital Agenda for Europe estimates that the publishing industries employ around 750,000 jobs in more than 64,000 companies in EU. Technology has had an unusual impact and a massive economic change on publishing: it's changing the traditional business model and it's giving a key role to new distribution channels such as aggregation platforms. The technological evolutions affect the consumption patterns of publishing products and production processes, impacting all the areas of the book publishing value chain (Production - Design - Editorial - Distribution and sales - Marketing and publicity). The passage from physical to digital distribution, the zero marginal cost of producing an additional book, the many competitors entering this industry thanks to the digital technologies, the problems linked to electronic security, are only some of the characteristics of this revolution. ASAP takes into account the impact of the changes in the competences and skill, proposes an evolutionary map of the skill needs and designs and delivers flexible training programmes (one for each area of the publishing supply chain) that, according to EQF/ECVET standards and also establishing the quality principles of the EQAVET framework, will provide employees, but also unemployed, self-employed, low skilled employees and young VET students the opportunity to update their professional skills and knowledge covering the gap related to the lack of specific skills determined by the “digital revolution”.The project expects to promote a wide cooperation among the different stakeholders using a participatory portal and a MOOC (Massive Open Online Platform) platform for making the contents at the disposal of a massive target group (it can become the first MOOC of the Publishing Sector), also after the formal end of the project.

What is ALDUS
Aldus (named after 15th century's humanist and innovative publisher Aldo Manuzio) is the European Book Fairs' network, aimed at fostering the internationalization of publishing companies, rights exchange for translations and training opportunities for book professionals, with a focus on the digital shift.

The network
Aldus network originates from a consortium made of the two leading B2B International book fairs (Frankfurt and Bologna) and a rich variety of national book fairs (Rome, Vilnius, Riga, Lisbon and Bucharest). Starting from this kernel, the network has been continuously growing to become fully pan-European and, after one year and half, it already involves 16 European book fairs.

New engaging events
Book fairs are an important occasion for building capacities through professional and cultural programmes, especially in the area of internationalisation, translations, digital shift and audience development. By experimenting with new events formats, more interactive and engaging, Aldus supports book fairs to innovate their programmes, finding new ways to engage their audience.

A community of peers
Aldus is an online community for book professionals (http://www.aldusnet.eu/community/). It allows publishers, translators, literary agents and other book professionals to profile themselves and network with international peers through social networks, sharing ideas and finding new partnership opportunities.

The Knowledge Hub
Registered users have access to premium content on the Aldus Knowledge Hub and can subscribe to the Aldus newsletter to stay apprised of events and news.

The European project
Aldus (June 2016 – Sept. 2019) is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme. The partnership includes AIE (Italian Publishers Association - Coordinator) international book fairs (Frankfurt and Bologna), national fairs (Rome, Vilnius, Riga, Lisbon and Bucharest) and the European umbrella organisations of authors (EWC) and publishers (FEP), representing the European Union Prize for Literature.

FEP is a partner in the TISP project (Technology and Innovation for Smart Publishing) and a member of the NEM platform (New European Media), two initiatives aimed at increasing the integration of ICT and creative industries and at helping to shape the EU policy on research, development and innovation through feedback from the creative sector.

In this framework, TISP (in cooperation with NEM) has launched a Europe-wide survey aimed at investigating what the publishing industry needs in terms of access to research and finance and the R&D areas currently most relevant for innovation and investment by publishers.
The Frankfurt Bookfair is responsible for managing the survey and Nina Klein is the contact person for this (klein@bookfair.com).

The aim of the survey is twofold:
• To get input from stakeholders on the topic of R&D to be used for recommendations on EU funding programmes
• To reach out to stakeholders and promote TISP/ NEM as well as individual partners

Target group: European book publishing companies in the widest sense and their service providers.

The survey is open and available via the TISP Smart Book at http://www.smartbook-tisp.eu/resources/survey-what-are-the-most-important-rd-needs-in-european-publishing.It will run until 9 September.

The results of the survey will be presented in a Stakeholders' workshop planned for 8th October (2.00-4.30 pm) during the Frankfurt Book Fair, where Commission representatives of the Horizon 2020 and Creative Europe programmes will be present.

The workshop, also organised by TISP and NEM and the Frankfurt Book Fair, aims at connecting stakeholders from publishing, technology and related creative industries at EU level to discuss about what publishers need in order to innovate and how the EU can support research and innovation in the publishing sector.

The workshop will host:
– Innovative companies telling their success stories and their failures and what they need/ would have needed to make their lives easier.
– TISP and NEM presenting their approach and recommendations.
– EC representatives (DG Connect & DG Culture) presenting their strategy for supporting innovation in the creative industries.
– Presentation of the results of the TISP/ NEM survey on R&D needs in EU publishing.
A moderated discussion will take place.

Please don't hesitate to share the survey
