FEP events at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025

The Federation of European Publishers will participate in the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2025 with a full schedule of events. A more than 30-year tradition at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the FEP Rendez-Vous is an open event aimed at all professionals in the book sector. Each year, the Rendez-Vous focuses on European topics and policies that have an impact on the publishing sector.

European Book Market Statistics 2024-25

In what has become a traditional appointment on the first day of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Federation of European Publishers presents the results of its annual survey and research on European book market statistics. The presentation will provide detailed data for 2024, along with an overview of the market dynamics for the current year, as well as a summary of the main trends in the book industry over the last 20 years.

Tales of EUkraine: Every child deserves their own story

When: 15 October 2025, 15:00-16:00
Where: Ukrainian Collective Stand, Hall 4.1, F93

Tales of EUkraine is the project co-funded by Creative Europe and coordinated by the Federation of European Publishers to help Ukrainian children in European countries while at the same time supporting the Ukrainian publishing industry. Thanks to the project, nearly 200,000 bilingual children's books in Ukrainian and several European languages have already been distributed across Europe. Bilingual books in Ukrainian and in different languages, as well as informative material about the project, will be available at the Ukrainian stand.

Read for Resilience, Read for Real: How reading promotion campaigns strengthen the book sector

Thirteenth edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 12 February 2025, the Federation of European Publishers organised the 13th edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues with the support of SOFIA and with the following speakers:

Gauthier van Meerbeeck, Editorial Director of Le Lombard (Belgian publishing house specialised in comics and graphic novels),
Philippe Glorieux, Chief Marketing Officer of IMPS The Smurfs,
author François Boucq (winner of the Angoulême Grand Prix)
and Alix Garin, author of ‘Ne M'oublie pas' and ‘Impénétrable'.

The highly successful event was attended by around twenty participants, including eight Members of the European Parliament:

Laurence Farreng (France, RENEW), member of the Culture and Education Committee (CULT) and host of the event
Bernard Guetta (France, RENEW), substitute member of the CULT Committee
Fabienne Keller (France, RENEW), member of the LIBE Committee
Emma Rafowicz (France, Socialists & Democrats / S&D), member of the CULT Committee

As well as half a dozen assistants, including Isabelle Le Callennec's assistant (FR/EPP).

Laurence Farreng introduced the evening, recalling the obligation of transparency, respect for the opt-out and remuneration by AI companies, as well as the importance of freedom of expression (with occasional differences on secularism with the Nordics, who may emphasise the notion of blasphemy).

The two comic authors spoke of the long time it takes to produce their work (one to two years for an album). Gauthier van Meerbeeck mentioned the support, particularly financial, during this time and pointed out that 9 out of 10 albums are commercial failures.

The participants widely spoke about AI, notably:

– A. Garin called for a reflection on the bias of AIs and the society they may shape and noted that AI amounts to annihilating the fact of sharing an experience through art.

– F. Boucq explained that with AI, we give up discovering the world for ourselves, ‘the machine puts a distance between the author and the reader', he said, adding that ‘there is no symbolic world'.

Finally, Philippe Glorieux cited the emotional relationship that everyone has with the Smurfs around the world (the Smurfs have been translated into 55 languages).

MEP Emma Rafowicz expressed her disappointment at the final declaration of the AI Summit, held in Paris on 10-11 February. MEP Benoît Cassart was very sensitive to the issues of copyright and freedom of expression.

Adobe InDesign: Progress made towards mainstreaming accessibility

Publishers have less than one year to comply with the European Accessibility Act. By June 2025, all ebooks sold in Europe will have to be in accessible format if they do not fall under one of the exceptions in the EAA. During this seminar, publishers will hear which progresses have been made to facilitate the creation of accessible ebooks on Adobe InDesign, one of the most widely used programmes to create books and ebooks worldwide.

Young Publishing Professionals in Brussels – 3rd Edition #YPPiB 2024

The concept

Are you a passionate individual working in book publishing and you are eager to know more about what's happening in the publishing world beyond your country? Are you keen to engage with other like-minded colleagues from across Europe and dive into the most important trends shaping the book sector? Does the idea of participating in advocacy initiatives on both national and European levels interest you?

If your answer to the previous questions is “Yes!”, then you are the perfect match for “Young Publishing Professionals in Brussels” (YPPiB)! Hosted by the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) in collaboration with the Aldus Up project, YPPiB is a recurring event designed to bring together promising Young Publishing Professionals (YPPs) from all corners of Europe for two immersive days in the heart of Brussels.

Following the success of its past editions in 2019 and 2022, FEP will host the upcoming third edition of YPPiB on 13 and 14 May 2024. The project aims to not only inspire and connect young professionals but also to foster meaningful networking opportunities with the FEP office and its members. With YPPiB, FEP wants to inspire young publishing talents in the overall European idea and in upholding our industry values such as freedom of expression and freedom to publish.

Twelfth edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 22 November, the Federation of European Publishers organised its 12th edition of the Authors-Publishers Dialogue with the Spanish writer Javier Cercas, his Spanish publisher Juan Cerezo (Editorial Director, Tusquets Editores) and his Italian publisher Luigi Brioschi (President, Guanda Editore). The event gathered around 30 participants, of which 10 MEPs, as well as 9 MEPs' assistants. The event was hosted by MEPs Iban Garcia del Blanco (S&D, ES) and François-Xavier Bellamy (EPP, FR):

Iban Garcia del Blanco introduced the Dialogue by stressing the importance of protecting copyright. Javier Cercas quoted a philosopher who said that the success of a book is the result of the meeting between the private obsession of a writer and the public need of a society and highlighted the universal nature of literature. He stressed the importance of having a publisher, even abroad, in order to benefit from a strategy and contacts with booksellers: "The bookseller is the person who gives the reader the book he needs". In Catalonia, for example, it is thanks to booksellers that books become bestsellers. Luigi Brioschi observed that the challenge is to give the novel the form it deserves and that the author and publisher form a kind of couple. Juan Cerezo noted that "the merit is to have a nose".

In conclusion, F.-X. Bellamy acknowledged the power of books while calling for greater transparency between authors and publishers. He pointed to the need for ethical rules on artificial intelligence, in the name of democracy. Quoting Hegel, he recalled the role of publishers in selecting what is worth publishing and noted that today all words are put on the same level and that there is competition for attention.

The book market in Europe 2022/2023: main data and trends

For the second time at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Federation of European Publishers presents the results of its annual statistical survey of the European book market. After the introductory remarks by the FEP President Ricardo Franco Levi, FEP Deputy Director Enrico Turrin will present the detailed data collected by FEP on the turnover and the titles published by European book publishers in 2022, also looking at the evolution of formats and trade channels, and outline how main markets have performed thus far in 2023.

The European Union Prize for Literature - an opportunity to discover new European voices

On Wednesday 18 October at 13:00 (Frankfurt Studio), EUPL is organising a session with this year's winner: Martina Vidaić (Croatia, EUPL 2023). After an introduction by the Director of the DG EAC, Georg Häusler, Martina Vidaić will dialogue with a former EUPL author, Jasmin B. Frelih (Slovenia, EUPL 2016) about her winning book and what the EUPL can do for emerging writers.

From Inclusion to Innovation: how Accessibility is transforming the Book Value Chain

In recent years, accessibility has emerged as a critical factor in transforming the book value chain. This seminar will explore the dynamic relationship between accessibility and innovation, examining how accessibility initiatives are reshaping the publishing industry and fostering inclusivity within the industry.

Through a series of success stories, this seminar will examine how accessibility-driven initiatives sparked innovation from content production to distribution and consumption.

The seminar is organized by Fondazione LIA in collaboration with the Frankfurter Buchmesse, Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the Federation of European Publishers, the International Publishers Association, in the framework of Aldus UP, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

FEP Annual Rendez-Vous

When: Thursday, 19 October, 12h30-14h00 (CET)

FEP will organise its traditional Rendez-Vous at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Thursday, 19 October 2023, from 12:30 to 14:00. The meeting will be held in Room Illusion 1 (Congress Centre).

Participants will first hear about cultural policies in Europe from the Director at DG Culture (European Commission), Georg Häusler. The second part of the event will consist of a panel on artificial intelligence with Peter Schoppert, Director at the National University of Singapore Press and one of the best experts from our sector on AI, Thomas Heldrup, the Head of Content Protection&Enforcement at Danish Rights Alliance, and a publisher currently implementing the TDM opt-out protocol (name to be confirmed). FEP Legal Advisor Quentin Deschandelliers will brief participants on the state of play of the EU AI Act.

Tales of EUkraine - Project presentation and testimonials

When: Thursday, 19 October, 14h00-15h00 (CET)
Where: Aldus Up Stage, Hall 4.1, G17

European publishers are getting involved in the Creative Europe project "Tales of EUkraine": Why is this project so important? What are the learnings and best practices that publishers already involved can share with us? And what do they give to other publishers who want to get involved in the project? Answers to these questions will be given and discussed. Representatives of the European Commission will also take a closer look at the possibilities of the EU's "Creative Europe" funding programme for the European book industry.

Eleventh edition of the Author-Publisher Dialogues

On 10 May 2023, the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) organised the 11th Authors-Publishers Dialogues with two tandems: a French tandem, with Carole Martinez and her publisher Jean-Marie Laclavetine (Gallimard), and a Polish tandem, with the author and nature activist Adam Wajrak and Pawel Gozlinski (Agora). The event was organised with the help of SOFIA at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The background to the event was the preparation of a report on books by the Parliament.

Tomasz Frankowski (Poland, European People's Party - EPP), member of the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT), rapporteur for the report on the Future of the European Book Sector, and host of the event.
François-Xavier Bellamy (France/ EPP), member of the CULT and Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committees.
Emmanuel Maurel (France, Gauche Républicaine and Socialiste/Gauche), member of the CULT and Legal Committees and shadow rapporteur on the report on books for the Left.
Janina Ochojska (Poland, EPP)
Diana Riba I Giner (Spain, Greens), member of CULT and shadow rapporteur for the Greens on the report on books.

Some fifteen MEPs' assistants and political group advisers were also present.

The authors and their publishers discussed the importance of their collaboration and their bond of trust in the work of literary creation.

In his introduction, Tomasz Frankowski announced the publication of his draft report on 11 May. As part of the French dialogue, Jean-Marie Laclavetine explained that the publisher's role is "to bring out the best in the author". Carole Martinez confirmed that "Jean-Marie Laclavetine [gives her] the strength and confidence to see a book through to the end" and that the publisher must not damage but believe in the author's work. Jean-Marie Laclavetine emphasised that this is a long-term, patient process, describing the process of waiting for manuscripts, identifying and supporting authors: "a fruitful relationship that Amazon will never be able to offer".

During the Polish dialogue, Adam Wajrak, a naturalist journalist who does not hesitate to chain himself to trees in the Polish forest to prevent them from being cut down, confided that he hated writing. That's why he needs people to make him do it, and "a book is a team effort". He believes that writing "will enable us to survive the climate crisis because societies that read a lot do better". He believes that reading should not just be for entertainment purposes, and that "authors should all take a strong stand". Pawel Gozlinski warned of the difficulties Polish authors face in making a living from their works, and the risks of the subscription model for remunerating authors should it become dominant, as in the music sector.

The speakers then exchanged views with the guests, who were very interested and enthusiastic.
