On 25th March 2020, the President of the FEP, Rudy Vanschoonbeek wrote to the President of the European Commission, Mrs von der Leyen and the Commissioner for Culture, Mrs Gabriel, as well as to the President of the European Parliament, Mr Sassoli, the President of the Culture Committee, Mrs Verheyen and all the Members of the Culture Committee. FEP President also wrote to the Croatian Presidency and has asked members to share this message across Europe with governments and relevant parties. The appeal of European publishers to the European institutions demands for immediate measures and short- and medium-term actions including requesting a European level playing field in digital markets. FEP President Rudy Vanschoonbeek said ‘These are difficult days for the entire profession and for our partners; I think of our authors, the booksellers and the librarians. We are calling on the European Union and the national governments to ensure proper support for the book sector so that we can continue to share good stories, educational content, etc. United, we will stand stronger’.
